Baker's Coconut, 1914

£20.00

This isn't, strictly speaking, a menu cover but we could not resist offering this delightful little coconut face as a print.

This is the cover of a recipe book that was published by the Franklin Baker Company. In 1897, Mr Baker, from Philadelphia, recognized the potential of coconut as a food source. He and his son travelled to the Philippines to open processing plants that sent this nutrient-rich ingredient back to the United States. The family-run company was eventually bought by the General Foods Corporation. The artist is unknown in this 1914 illustration but he did a great job in conveying to people who would have been unfamiliar with the shape and taste of coconuts. that there was nothing to be afraid of. Coconuts, as we all know, make great cakes and desserts!
