Coffee Stop, Kansas City, 1940s

£20.00

We don’t know much about the Coffee Stop itself – beyond this classic, timeless menu art – but its location is certainly famous: the renowned Pickwick complex in Kansas City, Missouri (not the Kansas City in Kansas, just over the state line). Opened in the 1930s, the Pickwick complex housed the city’s bus terminal, an 11-storey hotel, a penthouse radio studio and a large office complex, on a prime site in the financial district of the city, near to the courthouse. At its peak in the 1950s, the bus terminal saw more than 4,400 departures a month.

By 1972 the hotel had become an old people’s home. The bus terminal moved away. And in 1996, a fire damaged large parts of the complex. But after years of neglect, a $65m redevelopment saw a new apartment complex opened in 2017.
