In the 19th century, some menu illustrations had a morbid/ mischievous sense of humor. This 1883 menu cover from the Briggs House Hotel in Chicago shows rabbits, chickens, a duck, a turtle and a frog dancing around a pot, unaware that they would shortly be inside that pot as the ingredients for a Thanksgiving dinner.
