Cliff House Gray, San Francisco, 1930s

£20.00

This great menu art, featuring a sea lion dressed as a waiter and about to serve champagne, comes from the famous Cliff House hotel and restaurant in San Francisco. Built in 1863, the year of the Battle of Gettysburg, it is still in operation today.

Constructed on cliffs on the westernmost edge of the city, The Cliff House has absolutely jaw-dropping views. Locals and tourists that have come here for decades to eat and drink, try to spot sea lions on the rocks below. Hence this charming menu cover which dates from the 1930s.

This menu was probably created to celebrate a change of ownership when George and Leo Whitney, owners of a local fairground called Playland, bought the property and extensively remodeled it.

The property, which has survived earthquakes, fires and serious storms, is the crown jewel of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013.
