Paragon Park 1913 - ABA Sea Book
This fanciful menu cover, dated 1913, was created for the American Bankers Association. It shows an impressively dressed lobster entertaining a group of mermaids. He towers over them with his giant claws but there’s a light-hearted aspect to it too, as the lobster is balancing a water melon like a juggler. With beautifully drawn clouds and a sailing ship in the distance, it’s certainly a striking image and typical of the era when dark humor was all the rage.
The menu cover was created for the annual day off for attendees of the ABA at Paragon Park, an amusement park located on Nantasket Beach in Hull, Massachusetts. The park closed in 1984.
