The Old Red House, London 1949


There was a limit on what and how a guest could order at The Old Red House, a couple of doors from Pimm's Head Office in the City of London. This was a vestige of World War II food rationing that was required by the English government. One could order fish or meat but not both. There was a limit of 3 courses per person that could not exceed 5 shillings in cost - there were 20 shillings in one pound. To put that in perspective a haircut cost 1 shilling in 1949. We have always been charmed by menu covers which are illustrated with map and this one is no exception.

The traditional recipe for the historic and refreshing cocktail, invented in 1851 by none other than James Pimm, an oyster bar owner, is:

Pimm’s Cup
-Fill a tall glass with ice
-1 ounce Pimm’s No. 1, a gin based spirit.
-3 ounces lemonade
Add for garnish as desired:
-Cucumber slice(s) 
-Mint Leaves
-Orange and/or strawberry slices
