The Rockingham, Portsmouth NH (Circa) 1910
This menu illustration from the grand and historic Rockingham Hotel in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is more than a hundred years old but looks as if it could have been drawn yesterday. Even the Lobsters R Good message seems modern – and who knew lobsters played golf?
The Rockingham was once owned by Frank Jones, a noted 19th century politician and successful businessman – he owned a brewery. Famed for its ornately decorated ceilings and elaborate wood paneling, the restaurant must have been a very pleasant place to dine.
The hotel was converted to condominiums in the 1970s but many of the early architectural features of the building survive.
