Windsor Hotel, St Paul, Thanksgiving 1883
This dinner menu for Thanksgiving 1883 is all about game (big and small) and lists antelope, buffalo, young black bear, red squirrel and opossum among the dishes on offer.
In its day, The Windsor Hotel was the finest establishment in St Paul, Minnesota. According to Alice Monfort Dunn, the owner's daughter, who lived in the hotel with her aunt in the 1880s, political conventions were often held there, with Republicans staying in one wing of the hotel and Democrats staying in the other. The hotel's dining room, with stained glass windows and a choice of open tables or curtained booths, was busy day and night, she said, with vast quantities of food served for 75 cents per person. The Windsor Hotel closed and was replaced by The St Paul Hotel, which remains an historic landmark and luxury hotel.
